A labour of love

Green fingers are the extension of a verdant heart. ~Russell Page

In this part deux of my 2008 spring diary, I cannot but help reminisce about some of my earlier posts where I have talked about my black thumb or my rakhi bro green.

And then there was Part 1 of my 2008 spring diary, where spring seemed full of blooming promise. So here we are at part two, and how does my garden grow?

Very well, my dear friend, very well. Some months ago, while I was chatting with dear G, and brought up the topic of my abysmal gardening skills, she, in her usual calm and collected manner, told me some words of wisdom which probably need to be frozen for posterity's sake. "You know what Altoid, along with watering them, shower the plants with a lot of love. Talk to them like you would to your kids."

And that's when it struck me. The plants have life. So why wouldn't they also have feelings? Don't we, as humans, constantly crave for love and kind words? Are we satiated with just our meals? Of course not. Then why should these beautiful beings of nature be any different? Nurture them, feed them, pat them on their heads and make encouraging talk- its just like an extension of the family. Thank you G!

Needless to say, it works. I present to you below, the tulips and daffodils, the geranium- of varying colors and scents; all these beauties that inhabit my front yard this spring. I am filled with equal portions of pride and delight.

Happy Spring everyone.

very nice.
Of late I seem to have a lot of problems with my plants especially the flowering ones -I am thinking of playing some music to them. No seriously, have you been to lalbagh nursery. They have music playing in the background all the time.
I could talk too - only I wouldn't know what I could tell them. :)

Usha : Yes, the music they play in Lalbagh is quite lilting, I'd bloom too if I were a flower.
About talking- I just talk to them like I would talk to any human being :D. I even admonished the dogwood tree for not growing well ;).
G! Thank you!
Durga : Sure, drive by anytime.

So true Altoid. I love to watch greenery and flowers and in general, nature. This reminded me of a report on TV regarding how music helped to grow much healthier plants.
Lovely pics. And yeah Happy spring. Here in Bangalore is HOT summer :(

Happy spring and happy gardening.

I am NOT the garden person at home. It is the better half. I just direct him sitting inside the house :)

Did I tell you? I used to wish my plants good morning everyday :-D. And guess what, my tomato plant kept giving tomatoes right till end of December, even after the leaves had dried and fallen off due to the cold :-).

nice flowers..:) there was an experiment that our own scientist, JC. Bose had done which exemplifies what you said in the post. "He claimed that plants can "feel pain, understand affection etc.," from the analysis of the nature of variation of the cell membrane potential of plants, under different circumstances. According to him a plant treated with care and affection gives out a different vibration compared to a plant subjected to torture." says wikipedia.

So a very happy and springy spring to you too..:)

Should have visited your blog earlier. Beautiful Beautiful!
I love gardening, one of the conditions I put while buying our first home was space to explore gardening. Even took a 3 month gardening course. But, plants just don't survive with me.
Will remember G's priceless words of wisdom next time I get to it.
